In her interview with WOWT, councilwoman LaVonya Goodwin emphasized that many of the recent homicides along 24th Street have occurred during late-night or early-morning hours. She stated:
“I’m asking the community to say I’m not participating in after-hours activity.”
Goodwin also noted that six of the last eight homicides on 24th Street over the past four years occurred after approximately 2:30 a.m., arguing that community participation is necessary alongside enforcement efforts.
A Week of Violence
Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. and Omaha police Chief Todd Schmaderer and spoke about the impact of the violence Wednesday evening, followed by an update Thursday from Omaha Police. Their joint statement followed a "rare" day of violence, including six people killed in four separate instances over 24 hours, on Wednesday, June 18:
Two Suspected Murder-Suicides
Lake Cunningham Hills Neighborhood: A man and a woman were found dead from gunshot wounds inside a home at 8830 N. 82nd Ave. Two young children, ages 5 and 1, were safely rescued after the 5-year-old called a family member for help.
85th and Izard Streets: Early Wednesday morning, a son discovered his parents, identified as Ruchell and George Jencks (both in their 60s), shot dead inside their home.
Gang Violence & Shooting
48th and Nicholas Streets: A shooting just after 1:00 a.m. left 17-year-old Aung Htoo dead, while 18-year-old Manish Gurung was hospitalized in critical condition. The officials noted that three of Wednesday's victims were of Asian descent and pledged specialized, diligent resources to investigate these cases alongside Omaha's Asian community.
Deadly Apartment Fire
11582 Davenport Plaza: One person died and another was injured during a severe apartment fire near 115th Street and West Dodge Road.
Prior to this day, Omaha had only recorded four homicides total in 2026. Chief Schmaderer reassured residents that despite this highly unusual and heartbreaking 24-hour spike, Omaha remains a generally safe city with historically low violent crime rates.
